Ayrshires, not the highest yielders

They give a third less than a Holstein and about four per cent butterfat. That is why the cream sits on top of the bottle, and it is also why the milk costs what it does.

The hut closes when the tank is empty

We fill it after the morning milking and again at four. On a hot Saturday it goes by lunchtime and the shutter comes down. We would rather turn people away than buy milk in and call it ours.

Glass bottles, and we wash them here

A crate of glass costs us more than plastic every single week once you count the washer, the breakages and the diesel. Fifty pence back on every one you return.

The round is three villages

Tuesdays and Fridays, and only as far as we can get back before the afternoon milking. We say no to doorstep orders most weeks and we would rather do that than be late for the cows.
